Boyd Cave/Skeleton Cave Print

Boyd cave is one of the longest caves in Central Oregon, and the closest to Bend. A lot of narrow passages and crawling makes this a fun one for adventurers. If you've got someone claustrophobic in your party, you might want to try Lava River Cave, since it's a bit more accessible, with railing walkways and wider chambers. Bring a flashlight or headlamp. Lanterns are awkward and difficult to use due to the small passages and crawling. Wear a hat or helmet too. The ceiling is often low and some of the edges are as sharp as knives. Wear long pants and long sleeves. The cave is cool all year long and you may get scratched up on the jagged volcanic walls or rock piles. Most visitors to the cave give up at the first breakdown pile or tight squeeze, but the further you go in, the more amazing things you'll discover. The cave goes an estimated 2000 feet, and should take you 20 minutes or so to reach the furthest accessible chamber. Don't forget to try turning off your flashlights at least once. It's amazing how your other senses improve! image21.jpg

Directions: You need to get onto China Hat Rd, which is south of town on the east side. Recent road improvements/construction has put up a divider on 97 to prevent turning onto China Hat while southbound. You'll need to go down another mile to Baker/Knott overpass and come back up 97 to get to China Hat rd.

Once on China Hat, reset your tripometer. You'll go 9 miles. After the first few miles you'll enter forest service/BLM land and the road will wind all over. After the 9 miles, just before a cattleguard, make a left onto FS 242. Boyd Cave will be just .2 miles on your left. Parking for half a dozen cars.
